Introduction
You may apply for permission to live and work in Ireland as a visiting academic or researcher for less than 12 months. As a visiting academic/researcher you must be paid from outside the State and be here to work for no longer than 12 months.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a permission it is necessary that you can support yourself financially, or that your sponsor will cover all your costs. You do not have permission to access State benefits while resident in the State as a visiting academic
Conditions
As a visiting academic you must be paid from outside the State and are here to work for less than 12 months. Lecturers on a sabbatical and CII Directors can apply to bring family members with them, subject to finances. Family members will not be allowed to work or access the labour market or state supports in any way. Children will be allowed to attend state schools. Other Visiting Academics such as PhD Students, Fulbright scholars, other CII staff members, etc. cannot bring family members unless they can provide evidence of substantial finances to support their family members.
Submit an application and required documents
There are a number of steps to the process of gaining Stamp 0 and registering as a non-EEA national, depending on your circumstances:
Apply for permission
In order to apply for permission please complete this application form (TPER (Stamp 0) – Application Form) and submit the application form along with all of the required documentation through the dedicated Customer Service portal. You can register for an account or log in to your existing account.

This letter of offer is given on the condition that you meet any required visa checks and is subject to the discretion of the Immigration Officer when you enter the State.
Visa requirements
If you are a visa required person and you have received your letter of offer, then you must contact your local visa office to apply for a visa to enter the State.
When stating the purpose of your visit on the visa application, you should select “other” and fully explain the purpose of your visit in the space provided.
When you receive a conditional letter of offer and have been issued with the correct visa, you may travel to the State. Please note that entry to the State is always at the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry.

A stamp will be added to your passport and your passport will be returned to you.
If you are granted permission and have an address in counties Dublin, Kildare Meath or Wicklow you must visit the registration office in Dublin or if your address is outside of the above mentioned counties visit a local Garda station to register your permission
