To become a citizen of another country if you are Irish

Under Irish law you do not have to give up Irish citizenship to become the citizen of another country. However, the law in some countries may require you to renounce your Irish citizenship before you can become a citizen there.

If you previously renounced Irish citizenship, you can apply to reacquire it under some circumstances.

To become an Irish citizen if you are a citizen of another country

Under Irish law you do not have to give up another citizenship to:

  • Apply to become an Irish citizen by naturalisation
  • Claim Irish citizenship by birth, descent or other reasons.
