Following the publication of the Review of the Atypical Scheme for non-EEA Crew in the Irish Fishing Fleet on the 11 October 2022, Immigration Services would like to advise all employers that have utilised the AWS for the employment of Non EEA crew that the scheme will close for new online applications on the 31 December 2022.

The closing of the AWS scheme will provide for the transition from the AWS system to the Employment Permit system which was one of the key recommendations of the published report. The transition to the employment-permit based system, will require a submission by the sector of a comprehensive business case to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to support their inclusion.

However, in order for employers to continue to avail of Non EEA crew any new online application received by the AWS Unit prior to the closing date of the 31 December 2022 will be processed and the normal terms and conditions of the AWS scheme will continue to apply. Applications by post will not be considered.

In addition, current AWS permission holders whose permission will expire on or before 31 December 2022 are also encouraged to ensure that their application for renewal of their permission is made by 31 December 2022 so that they continue to hold a valid permission under the Scheme that allows them to work in the State.

Employers are advised to avail of the AWS scheme prior to its closing date to ensure that their non EEA employment crew needs are met during any transition period to the Employment permit scheme.
