Introduction
In response to developments in Afghanistan in August 2021 the Irish government introduced an immigration programme specifically for Afghan nationals. It offered temporary Irish residence to Afghan nationals whose freedom or safety was at risk, whether they were resident in Afghanistan or in certain neighbouring countries having fled from Afghanistan on or after 1 August 2021 and who had close family members in Ireland.
Are decisions final?
If you have received a negative decision in respect of your application to the AAP, it is open to you to appeal this decision. However, the Minister’s decision following this appeal process will be final.
How do I appeal a negative decision under the Afghan Admission Programme?
If you wish to appeal a negative decision under the Programme, you must do so within 20 working days of the date of the decision letter.
Your appeal must be submitted on the application appeal form. The electronically completed form must be returned in electronic format by email with the word “Appeal” together with any reference number provided by this Office on the decision letter included in the subject line to: [email protected].
How much will it cost?
There is no fee for submitting an appeal.

As the review will be papers-based, no new additional information or documentation will be requested/accepted.
What happens if I receive a positive decision on my appeal?
You will be informed in writing if you the outcome of your appeal is a positive decision one. The letter issued from this office will outline the steps you need to take to bring your approved family members to this State.
What happens if I receive a negative decision to my appeal?
If you receive a negative decision on your appeal, you will be informed in writing of the reasons for this decision. The Minister’s decision on who may or may not come to Ireland under this humanitarian programme is final.
